I'm no expert on any of this, but for what it is worth I Tivo the 11:00AM
Mass At Notre Dame's Sacred Heart Basilica, which is on the Hallmark channel
every Sunday.
They have a wonderful cantor upfront who "invites" the people to sing. In
the back the choir is in the loft. The choir -- which is one of the best
liturgical choirs I have ever heard -- does "classical" or "traditional"
often at the Presentation of the Gifts, sometimes with instruments in
addition to the pipe organ.
The cantor upfront and choir in the rear seems to work fine.
