A Theology of the Table . . .

My friend in Ft. Worth -- Kirsten Huber -- sent me a really interesting link today -- http://www.thefeastonline.com/page.asp?id=11 -- which is the work of Daniel Rabourdin, a TV producer for EWTN who also has an MA in Thomistic Philosophy from the Sorbonne in Paris. He was raised in Provence, the land of ratatouile. He says, "There is a sacred bond between food and heaven."
In Birmingham, he hosts monthly dinners, which he calls "Theology of the Table". Each month features different recipes, and conversation on religious subjects. December, for example, was --

Dinner 3: Of whole bread ~ About nurturing - "If any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever." Learn to make Poilane bread, most revered bread of France. A naturally made whole-wheat Sourdough truly nutritious and never fattening. Explore food becoming us. Menu: On roasted wild yeast bread, Provencal bruschetta of bell pepper, eggplant, mint and garlic, bruschetta aioli, bruschetta tapenade.

You can imagine what I thought about this -- "WHAT A GREAT IDEA!" I am thinking that we should try this here in Oklahoma City, and encourage others to do this elsewhere. The central apostolates of the Oscar Romero Catholic Worker House revolve around food -- we give food to the poor, teach and practice garden, write about food, participate in the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, etc. It's about time we made explicit the connection that exists between our Catholic spirituality and food.

Let's pass the word along about this new ministry he is beginning, and pray that EWTN adds a Theology of the Table television show featuring Mr. Rabourdin!
